Grammarly Pro pricing: the $30 charge, explained
The email lands, or the card statement updates: Grammarly, $30. Again. You vaguely remember signing up during a busy month, and now you're here, checking whether $30 a month is simply what this thing costs. It isn't — or rather, it is only if you let it bill you the expensive way.
The $216 mistake
Here is the whole page in one paragraph. Pro billed monthly is $30 a month, which is $360 a year. Pro billed annually is $144 a year. The gap is $216 — every year, for nothing. No other tool in our pricing database punishes monthly billing this hard: you can buy the annual plan, throw away five months of it, and still come out ahead of the person who paid monthly all year.
And Grammarly is not an exception in your stack. Most subscriptions hide the same pattern at a smaller scale. Add yours up — the real total is usually the first surprise.

The "$12/month" banner trick
Open Grammarly's pricing page and the number you see is $12 a month. That figure is real — but it is the annual plan divided by 12, displayed like a monthly price. The actual month-to-month price, $30, only shows up when you go looking for it; Grammarly's own support article is where the full menu lives: $30 monthly, $60 per quarter, $144 per year, per member.
Every vendor plays some version of this game, which is why this site exists. When a pricing page shows one number in large type, assume it is the annual average until proven otherwise.

Who should pay nothing at all
You write occasionally. A few emails, the odd document, a résumé once a year. The free plan's basic grammar, spelling and punctuation checks cover that. $144 a year for insurance against a typo in an email is not a writing strategy.
You already pay for an AI assistant. If ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro is in your stack, you are already paying for a tool that rewrites sentences and fixes tone all day. Plenty of people carry both and use one. Before Grammarly renews again, ask which of the two actually touched your writing this week — and cancel the other.
You signed up for one project. The thesis is submitted, the job search is over, the book draft is done. Pro does not get cheaper while it sits idle; it just gets quieter about charging you. Cancel now, resubscribe the week you need it again.
Who should pay — and how
You write in English every working day, and it isn't your first language, or it is your product. Reports, proposals, support replies, content — writing is the job. Annual Pro at $144 is cheap for that, and this is the one case where we'd tell you to stop deliberating.
You're not sure yet. Don't guess with $144. Take the free plan, and if you hit its limits during a genuinely heavy stretch, buy one quarterly cycle ($60) as a paid trial with an end date. Graduate to annual only after a full quarter of reaching for it daily.
You're on monthly right now. You've found the most expensive way to own this product. If Pro has earned its place, switch to annual at the next renewal and keep the $216. If it hasn't, that's your answer too — cancel, and let the free plan carry you.
